English is widely understood in Pattaya's tourist-facing businesses, so you can absolutely get by without Thai. But a handful of words — used with a smile — consistently gets a warmer response, and helps in the moments (a market stall, a baht bus, a quiet soi) where English coverage thins out.

Everyday words and phrases

The particle that matters most: khrap / kha

Thai politeness particles are added to the end of a sentence — khrap for male speakers, kha for female speakers — and used constantly in everyday, polite speech. Tacking one onto “sawasdee” or “khob khun” instantly makes a greeting or thank-you sound natural rather than abrupt, and it's the single easiest habit to pick up.

A few honest caveats

• Thai is a tonal language — the same syllable can mean different things depending on tone. A written transliteration only gets you so far; don't expect precision, and don't worry about it either — locals are used to, and generally appreciate, visitors making the attempt;
• The wai (the palms-together, slight-bow greeting) is a real part of everyday Thai courtesy, but it has its own unwritten rules of who initiates it and how deep to bow — as a visitor, a smile and a spoken greeting is always safe; you don't need to master the wai;
