The essentials

• Cash: essential for baht buses, markets, street food, small vendors. Carry modest amounts;
• ATMs: everywhere, but Thai ATMs typically charge a fixed foreign-card withdrawal fee on top of your home bank's fees — withdraw larger amounts less often to minimise it. Use machines at banks or inside stores, and shield your PIN;
• Currency exchange: dedicated exchange booths generally offer far better rates than hotels or airports — compare rates, which are competitive in a tourist city;
• Cards: accepted at hotels, malls, larger restaurants and shops (sometimes with a surcharge); not at street level. Watch for skimming — use cards at reputable places;
