• Wongamat & Naklua (north): quieter, more upscale/local stretches away from the centre;

The island escape

• Koh Larn (Coral Island): the popular nearby island with clearer water and better beaches than the mainland — a short ferry or speedboat from Bali Hai pier. The go-to for a proper beach day;

• Ko Samet (a drive east toward Rayong, then ferry) is the region's prettier island for an overnight.

Being honest about water and sand quality

Set expectations correctly: the mainland beaches are convenient and fun rather than postcard-pristine — water clarity along Pattaya and even Jomtien varies and is generally a step below what you'll find on the islands. If clear water and quiet sand are the priority, plan an island day rather than judging Pattaya by its mainland shoreline; if convenience, food, chairs and people-watching are the priority, the mainland delivers exactly that.

Practical beach notes

• Paying a small fee for a beach chair and umbrella is standard practice on the busier mainland stretches — it usually includes basic service from the vendor;
• Jet-ski rentals have a notorious damage-scam reputation region-wide — photograph everything first or skip (safety);
